GAME COMMONS ONLINE PLATFORM

***Call for Builders and Players***

We invite you to join us building the Game Commons online platform and playing distributed multi-user games. Returning to the round table gathering of a thursday night card game, we are looking forward on testing intelligent engines and minds and playing for winning the hand.

We envision the Game Commons platform to be
- a radical departure from ego-shooter style games
- a contested playground for commons gaming
- an inter-operative online environment

The overall objectives are to
- further public domain game culture
- collaboratively develop a new syntax and semiotics of computer games
- critically engage artists and the wider public in this process

We hope to achieve this by
- modeling the platform after a decentralized database
- coming together in a shared network space
- playing weekly or even week-long tournaments in different places

We invite Game Commons players to create game related artefacts - descriptions of rules, working code, texts and textures, images and sounds - and store them locally on their own servers/webspace. Each locally stored object or artefact is annotated in a machine-readable way, represented by an index of playing cards. Its content gets aggregated in the Game Commons platform where the players gather. Deriving from the commons resources, the gathering players further exploit the artefacts in generative modes.

A Thursday night card game can be turned into week long tournament where players are gathered online and in actual round table setting. The game-play conducted in realtime is designated as a distributed network performance. Ultimately a winner can be produced, yet in the game of commons, the winner takes all and loses all.
